Are small, irregularly shaped rocky and metallic bodies. They range from the size of a car to several kilometers across. Although most asteroids orbit the sun in the asteroid belt (between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter), some travel through space on elliptical orbits like comets. They cross the orbits of other bodies, including Earth.
