Carried the slaves they had purchased or captured from Africa to slave marts in the new world

Most free black people lived in cities like Philadelphia, New York City, Baltimore, and Boston.

What hardships did free African Americans face in their daily lives?

Free African Americans faced several hardships that were nonstop such as discrimination, legal restrictions, economic challenges, and social isolation. Communities were segregated and many faced hostility from white populations

How did some free African Americans succeed?

Some started their businesses, pursued education, and built strong communities that provided support and resources. Pursuing education secured them better jobs and improved their social standing.

Henry Blair was an inventor and one of the first African Americans to receive a patent. He is known for inventing a corn planter and a cotton seed planter.

Martin Delaney was an abolitionist, physician, and writer. He advocated for the rights of African Americans and was a proponent of black nationalism.

Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church

The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was one of the first independent Black churches in the United States. It was used as a community center, a place of worship, and a venture for social and political activism among free Black people.

The Prince Hall Masons are a Masonic organization founded by Prince Hall, an African American abolitionist. It provided a space for Black men to gather, promote fellowship, and support one another in the fight for civil rights and social justice.

Who was the 1st Black man to argue a case before the Supreme Court? When?

The first Black man to argue a case before the Supreme Court was Richard Allen. He argued a case in 1835 regarding the rights of Black Americans, advocating against discrimination and for the rights of free Black people.

Paul Cuffe was a prominent African American businessman and abolitionist in the early 19th century. He was known for his work in shipping and for advocating for the resettlement of free Black people to Africa. Cuffe also supported educational initiatives and community development for African Americans.
