What are the 3 parts of the cell theory?

1 - All living things composed of cell(s). 2 - Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things. 3 - New cells are produced from existing cells.

What does 'structure' refer to?

What something is made of and how its parts are put together.

What does 'function' refer to?

What something does; Its purpose; Its job/role.

The same as what organisms need - Food, water, space and to maintain homeostasis.

What are examples of cell functions?

Take in food and water, expel wastes, make usable energy and proteins, provide structure to the organism, make new cells, etc.

How are cells in a multicellular organism described?

Specialized - Different types of cells have different jobs and work together.

What is the relationship between a cell's structure and its function?

Direct relationship. Ex: The function of red blood cells is to move through blood vessels and deliver oxygen to various parts of the body. The structure of RBC includes a small size and flexibility for moving through blood vessels, and it has hemoglobin (a protein that binds to oxygen).

What is the eyepiece of a microscope?

The part of the microscope you look through. Contains an ocular lens (10X).

What are microscope objectives?

2-4 stubby parts attached to the nosepiece. Each contains a lens with a different magnification.

What is the course adjustment knob used for?

Used to find and focus specimen under the lowest power ONLY. Moves the body tube or stage up and down.

What is the fine adjustment knob used for?

Sharpens the image of the specimen being viewed under the microscope.

What is the diaphragm on a microscope?

Can be rotated to adjust how much light is shining through the specimen.

How is total magnification calculated?

Objective lens x ocular lens (10x).

What are electron microscopes used for?

To study detailed structures of a cell that cannot be easily seen or observed by light microscopy.

What is the scanning objective used for?

Lowest power - Always used FIRST to find and focus a specimen.

What is the high-power objective used for?

Only the FINE adjustment can be used to focus when using this objective because it is longer.

How should a microscope be carried?

Using the arm and base (2 hands).

What is a compound light microscope?

Shines light through a specimen and two lenses to magnify a small specimen.
