Rounding

Rounding is the process of adjusting the digits of a number to make it simpler while keeping its value close to what it was. This often involves increasing or decreasing the number to the nearest specified place value.

Rounding to the nearest hundred thousand means adjusting a number to the closest multiple of 100,000.

If the digit to the right of the rounding place is 5 or greater, you round up. If it is less than 5, you round down.

400,000

345 does NOT round to 400 when rounding to the nearest hundred.

To round 45,291 to the tens place, look at the digit in the ones place (1). Since it is less than 5, you round down to 45,290.

670,000

The value of the digit 7 in the number 6,789 is 700.

Rounding to the nearest ten adjusts the number to the closest multiple of 10, while rounding to the nearest hundred adjusts it to the closest multiple of 100.

To round a number with a decimal, look at the digit immediately to the right of the rounding place. Apply the same rules: round up if it's 5 or greater, and round down if it's less than 5.
