Multi-Digit Addition and Subtraction

Multi-digit addition is the process of adding numbers that have more than one digit, aligning the numbers by place value and adding each column from right to left, carrying over any values as necessary.

Multi-digit subtraction is the process of subtracting numbers that have more than one digit, aligning the numbers by place value and subtracting each column from right to left, borrowing from the next column when necessary.

To solve a word problem involving subtraction, identify the total amount, the amount being taken away, and subtract the latter from the former to find the remaining amount.

Place value is crucial in multi-digit addition and subtraction as it determines the value of each digit based on its position, ensuring accurate calculations.

Carrying in addition is the process of transferring a value from one column to the next when the sum of a column exceeds 9, ensuring that each column only contains a single digit.

Borrowing in subtraction is the process of taking a value from the next column when the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit, allowing for accurate subtraction.

To check your work after multi-digit addition, you can add the sum to the number you added to see if it equals the original number.
