Subtraction with regrouping is a method used to subtract numbers when the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit in any column, requiring borrowing from the next left column.

1. Start from the rightmost column. 2. If the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit, borrow 1 from the next column to the left. 3. Subtract the digits in each column from right to left.

To 'borrow' means to take 1 from the next left column when the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit, effectively reducing the left column by 1 and increasing the current column by 10.

Regrouping is necessary when the digit in the minuend (the number being subtracted from) is smaller than the digit in the subtrahend (the number being subtracted), ensuring accurate calculations.

In the problem 52 - 27, you cannot subtract 7 from 2. You would borrow 1 from the 5 (making it 4) and add 10 to the 2 (making it 12), then subtract: 12 - 7 = 5.
