What is the lithosphere?

The lithosphere is the rigid outer layer of Earth, which includes the crust and the very top part of the mantle. It’s broken into large pieces called tectonic plates.

The asthenosphere is the soft, stretchy part of the mantle just below the lithosphere. Tectonic plates float on top of this layer because it moves like very slow, hot pudding.
