Commas are used to indicate a pause between parts of a sentence, separate items in a list, or clarify meaning.

You do not need a comma before 'because' unless it is necessary to avoid confusion.

A comma should be placed before the conjunction (like 'and', 'but', 'or') that connects two independent clauses.

I bought apples, oranges, bananas, and grapes.

Use commas to separate two or more adjectives that describe the same noun, e.g., 'It was a long, tiring journey.'

Use a comma after an introductory phrase or clause to separate it from the main clause.

Do not use a comma when it separates a subject from its verb or when it separates a verb from its object.

My brother, who is a doctor, lives in New York.

Use commas to set off the name of the person being addressed, e.g., 'Can you help me, Sarah?'.

Use commas to set off non-essential clauses that add extra information but are not necessary to the meaning of the sentence.
