Comma Rules A-J

Commas are used to indicate a pause between parts of a sentence, separate items in a list, and clarify meaning.

A comma should be used before a conjunction (like 'and', 'but', 'or') when it connects two independent clauses.

An independent clause is a group of words that can stand alone as a sentence because it has a subject and a verb.

A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence and usually begins with a subordinating conjunction (like 'because', 'although').

Commas are used to separate items in a list, and a comma is placed before the conjunction in a series (e.g., apples, oranges, and bananas).

A direct address is when you speak directly to someone, and a comma is used to separate the name from the rest of the sentence (e.g., 'Let's eat, Grandma!').

A comma should be used after an introductory phrase or clause to separate it from the main clause (e.g., 'After dinner, we went for a walk.').

A compound sentence consists of two independent clauses joined by a conjunction, and a comma is placed before the conjunction.

When introducing a quote, use a comma before the quote if it is a complete sentence (e.g., She said, 'Hello!').

A non-essential clause adds extra information to a sentence but is not necessary for its meaning, and it should be set off by commas (e.g., My brother, who lives in New York, is visiting.).
