To add $$\frac{1}{2}$$ and $$\frac{1}{4}$$ , convert $$\frac{1}{2}$$ to $$\frac{2}{4}$$ . Then, $$\frac{2}{4} + \frac{1}{4} = \frac{3}{4}$$ .

What is the result of $$\frac{3}{4} - \frac{1}{4}$$ ?

To subtract $$\frac{1}{4}$$ from $$\frac{3}{4}$$ , keep the denominator the same: $$\frac{3-1}{4} = \frac{2}{4}$$ .

If Raja needs to double $$\frac{3}{8}$$ of a stick of butter, how much does he need?

Doubling $$\frac{3}{8}$$ gives $$\frac{6}{8}$$ of a stick of butter.

Zack and Julie donated $$\frac{4}{10}$$ to the library, $$\frac{1}{10}$$ to the animal shelter, and $$\frac{3}{10}$$ to the food bank. What fraction of their profits did they donate?

They donated a total of $$\frac{4}{10} + \frac{1}{10} + \frac{3}{10} = \frac{8}{10}$$ or $$\frac{4}{5}$$ .

If you have $$\frac{3}{4}$$ pound of chocolate chips and use $$\frac{1}{4}$$ pound, how much is left?

You have $$\frac{3}{4} - \frac{1}{4} = \frac{2}{4}$$ or $$\frac{1}{2}$$ pound left.

How much snow fell in total if 3/8 inch fell in the morning and 2/8 inch in the afternoon?

Total snow = $$\frac{3}{8} + \frac{2}{8} = \frac{5}{8}$$ inches.
