An algorithm written in a programming-style construct, but it does not follow a specific programming language.

A diagram that is used to show the breakdown of an algorithm into steps.

Looks at each item in a list sequentially until the desired search item is located or until all the items have been searched.

A more efficient way of searching for items in a long list by successively dividing it into two subsets until the search item is located.

1. Compare the first two items in the list. If they are in order, leave them as they are. If not, swap them. 2. Repeat step 1 for items 2 and 3 in the list. 3. Continue applying step 1 to the rest of the items in the list.

1. Look at the second item in a list. 2. Compare it to all items before it and insert the item into the right place. 3. Repeat step 2 for the third, fourth, fifth etc. items until the last item in the list has been inserted into the correct place.

1. Split the list in half to create two subsets. 2. Continue to split the subsets in half, until only individual items remain. 3. Merge individual items together in pairs, putting them back together in order. 4. Continue to merge the pairs together, with each subset being sorted in order. 5. Once all subsets have been combined, the list should be in order.

Subroutines (subprograms)

A self-contained sequence of program instructions that performs a specific task.

A subprogram that returns a value to the main program when it is called.

A subprogram that carries out a specific task but does not return values to the main program.

A variable that is used only within a subprogram. When the subprogram has completed its work, the local variable is discarded.

A variable that is available anywhere in a program including any subprograms.

The uses of subprograms

- Allow the production of structured code - Make programs shorter - Make program code easier to read and test - Shorten the development time of a program - Make testing easier - Make code more readable

- % symbol: substitute for one or many characters - * symbol: represent 'all fields' Example: WHERE TutorGroup LIKE "%X"; returns all records with a tutor group ending with an X.

Substrings or portions of a string can be snipped out. Example: mystring = "RosieandJack"; snip = mystring.substring(2,4); print(snip) - prints 'siea'.

The process of determining the identity of a user.

The process of checking that any data that is input is sensible, reasonable, and appropriate.

Ensure that data has been entered.

Ensure that an input falls within a required range.

Ensure that a specified number of characters have been entered.

Ensures that the software produces the expected results and meets the needs of the users.
