What is the medulla?

The medulla is the innermost layer of the hair, soft and practically invisible. It is the central column of the hair shaft, similar to a honeycomb, consisting of transparent cells and air spaces. Made of keratin, it is not present in every hair, only in large, thick hairs.

The cortex is the middle and thickest layer of the hair, making up 75% to 80% of the hair's volume. It dictates the strength, color, and texture of the hair.

What is the cuticle of the hair?

The cuticle is the thin, outermost layer of the hair, comprised of overlapping scales of about 10 layers. These scales are transparent, allowing the hair color to show through, and protect the hair by keeping nutrients in.
