why do sophomores select first?

University leadership has determined that sophomores are a unique population that benefits from the presence of a Resident Fellow. The only way we can ensure sophomores are assigned to RF residences is to allow them to go first. In order to make the process as fair and equitable as possible, sophomores are only able to select “sophomore priority spaces.” These are shared rooms in dormitory housing that includes an RF. Sophomore priority spaces do not include singles, any spaces on the Row, Mirrielees apartments, or EVGR-A Duan Family Hall apartments.

why are some juniors unassigned after House and Room Selection?

Currently, undergraduate students are housed within traditional undergraduate housing and EVGR-A, which is a graduate housing residence. By placing undergraduates in EVGR-A, we increase the number of graduate students who must live off campus. The first round of House and Room Selection takes place in May. Over the summer months, over 100 students (on average) will cancel their undergraduate housing assignments. Instead of forcing more graduate students to live off campus in order to get all undergraduates assigned during the first round of House and Room Selection, some students are left unassigned after the first round. These students fill in the vacancies created when undergraduates cancel their housing over the summer. This allows us to maximize our undergraduate housing while also giving as many graduate students as possible the opportunity to live on campus. Juniors who are not assigned during the first round of House and Room Selection are still guaranteed a space within undergraduate housing if they participate in the subsequent assignment rounds.

Can students who apply with OAE or in an OAE group reject their assignment?

Students assigned through this process do not have the option to reject their housing assignment and participate in the self-select process.

Religious Observance Requests

If any member of the group is also requesting a disability accommodation for housing, the earlier March 14 deadline applies. Students who indicate that they are submitting religious observance requests will be prompted to rank their housing options. Housing Assignments staff will use these choices when assigning students to houses and rooms. Students are strongly encouraged to keep ranking choices until they have no preference regarding the choices left unranked. If you have a limited number of choices and cannot be placed in any of them, you will be assigned to a residence and/or room type not listed on your application. If group members have ranked their housing options differently, Housing Assignments will use the choices as ranked by the student with the religious observance request.

All students, including students who are participating in the Pre-Assignment process for theme residences, must sign the residence agreement and submit their housing applications by the Wednesday, April 16, deadline. Pre-Assignment results will be announced by ResEd on May14. Even though the housing application is due on April 16, students will have the ability to edit their groups up until 8 a.m. PT on Monday, May 19. This will give students the opportunity to adjust their groups based on the pre-assignment results. If a student is applying for pre-assignment and is also requesting a disability accommodation and/or is making a religious observance request, they will need to meet the earlier application deadlines. If one or more students in a group are selected to pre-assign into a theme house, those students will be assigned to the theme house(s) and the other group members will go through the house and room selection process. Students who successfully pre-assign will be assigned a gate time but will only be able to select a room within their pre-assigned residence.

Students with coterm status who are currently seniors or beyond (i.e. students who matriculated in 2021 or earlier) may apply for either graduate or undergraduate housing if they have guarantee quarters remaining. They may not apply for both processes. Coterm students who will have conferred their undergraduate degrees before autumn or who have used all of their guarantee quarters are only eligible to apply for graduate housing. Coterms who are currently juniors or sophomores and will have guarantee quarters remaining are only eligible for undergraduate housing. The Graduate Housing Lottery will open on April 2 and applications are due Thursday, May 1. More information about the Graduate Housing Lottery will be available on our website in early April. Coterms with housing guarantee quarters who are interested in applying for undergraduate housing should complete their undergraduate housing applications before the April 16 deadline. These students will then participate in the House and Room Selection process like all other undergraduates and will select at the same time as the seniors. Please remember that a meal plan is required in all undergraduate residences, except Mirrielees. Students who transition from undergraduate to graduate status mid-year may not be eligible to move from undergraduate to graduate housing and students will not be granted meal plan waivers due to coterm status. Students with financial need should consult Financial Aid.
