How did the conditions presented in the passage affect businesses? There were not many types of transportation in the newly founded Texas. Each type of transportation had its problems. Many rivers in Texas were too shallow for the large steamboats to use all year round. Horse-drawn stagecoach trips were slow, hot, and dusty. The few roads that existed made travel almost impossible in rainy times. It cost a lot of money to transport goods by carriage or wagon. Poor routes made journeys longer, harder, and therefore more expensive. “Rise of the railroad”.
