FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

What is the respiratory system?

Back

It is a series of organs responsible for supplying the body with oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide and water vapour.

2.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

What are the main organs of the respiratory system?

Back

The lungs and they carry out the exchange of gases as we breathe. The other organs include the nose, mouth, trachea or windpipe, alveoli or air sacs, capillaries and diaphragm.

3.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

What is the breathing process?

Back

As we inhale or breathe in, air enters the nose or mouth and travels down to the trachea or windpipe.

The trachea divides into the right and left bronchi that passes oxygen to the lungs.

In the lungs the bronchi tubes divide into smaller and smaller branches called bronchioles.

The bronchioles end into tiny air sacs called alveoli. Each of the alveoli is surrounded by tiny blood vessels called capillaries.

Oxygen enters the alveoli sacs where a gas exchange takes place.

From the alveoli sacs, carbon dioxide leaves the the body through the bronchioles into the bronchi, which finally reach the trachea and is exhaled or breathe out through the nose or mouth

During this breathing process, the diaphragm which is located under your ribs is also very busy.

4.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

Which tube branches to the left and right side of the lungs?

Back

The trachea or the windpipe

5.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

Where does gas exchange takes place in the lungs?

Back

The alveoli

6.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

Explain how gas exchange takes place in the lungs?

Back

through diffusion between the tiny air sacs (alveoli) and the surrounding capillaries, where oxygen moves from the alveoli into the blood, and carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.

7.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

When does the diaphragm muscles relax?

Back

during exhalation (breathing out),

8.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

Explain why breathing is important to keep us alive?

Back

it allows our bodies to take in oxygen, which is essential for cellular energy production, and expel carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism

9.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

How does the respiratory and circulatory system work together?

Back

The respiratory system brings in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide, while the circulatory system transports these gases throughout the body.
