Formula for calculating work

Work (joules) = Force (N)X Distance

Work is a scalar quantity.

Even though force and displacement are vectors.

The amount of matter in a given substance.

A wheel on an axle designed to support movement and change the direction of a taut cable.

The product of the force exerted on the machine and the displacement of this force.

Mechanical advantage in real machines

In real machines on Earth, the mechanical advantage is always less than 100%.

The less friction there is, the closer the output work is to the input work.

The efficiency of any machine is the ratio of the output work to the input work.

Efficiency = output work/Input work x 100%

The output work is less than the input work.

A lever helps move a heavy or firmly fixed load by applying pressure on one end.

Newton’s First Law of Motion

An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. This law is often called "the law of inertia" (tendency to resist change)

Newton’s Second Law of Motion

Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. The greater the mass (of the object being accelerated) the greater the amount of force needed (to accelerate the object)

Newton’s Third Law of Motion

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction

Speed is the change in position of an object per unit of time.

Velocity is the speed an object moves in a particular direction.

Direction is the course along which the object is moving.

Acceleration is the change in velocity per unit of time

Weight is a measure of the force due to gravity acting on a mass

Mass is the amount of matter in a given substance

A lever is a rigid bar resting on a pivot, used to help move a heavy or firmly fixed load with one end when pressure is applied to the other.

A first-class lever is a beam, rod or stick with the load at one end, the fulcrum in the middle and the force applied on the other end.

Second class levers have the resistance (or load) in the middle: the effort is applied on one side of the resistance and the fulcrum is located on the other side.

Third class levers have the effort in the middle: the resistance (or load) is on one side of the effort and the fulcrum is located on the other side.

The wheel and axle consists of a wheel attached to a smaller axle so that these two parts rotate together in which a force is transferred from one to the other.

A screw is a mechanism that converts rotational motion to linear motion, and a torque (rotational force) to a linear force. The most common form consists of a cylindrical shaft with helical grooves or ridges called threads around the outside.

A pulley is a wheel on an axle or shaft that is designed to support movement and change of direction of a taut cable, rope or belt along its circumference.

A fixed pulley wheel and axle stay in one place. A good example of a fixed pulley is a flag pole.

A movable pulley is a pulley that is free to move up and down, and is attached to a ceiling or other object by two lengths of the same rope.

A compound pulley is a combination of fixed and a movable pulleys that forms a block and tackle.

A wedge is a piece of wood, metal, or some other material having one thick end and tapering to a thin edge, that is driven between two objects or parts of an object to secure or separate them.

A compound machine is a machine composed of two or more simple machines.
