Scope in the analysis stage

A list of deliverables that the project will hand over to the client and end-user, including any time limits for the project.

Examples of deliverables in a project

Design, completed program, test plan, test results, and evaluation report.

Purpose of defining scope

To outline what the project will deliver and any time constraints.

What type of value does a function return?

A function can only return a single value .

Where are Actual Parameters declared and where can they be found?

Actual parameters are declared outside of a subprogram and used in the main program. Actual parameters are found in brackets on the same line as the function or procedure call .

Where do Formal Parameters exist and where are they located?

Formal parameters only exist within the subprogram. Formal parameters are found in brackets on the first line of the function or procedure definition .

Where are Global Variables declared? Where can they be accessed/updated?

Global variables are declared outside of sub-programs. Global variables can be accessed and updated at any place in the program.

They reduce modularity because o sub-programs cannot create local variables with the same name without them clashing. o global variables may be accidentally updated by code within a sub-program.

Where are Local Variables declared? Where are they accessed/updated?

Local variables are declared inside sub-programs. Local variables can only be accessed and updated within the sub-program they are declared within.

· Local variables can have the same name as local variables in other sub-programs without causing a clash or errors. · When a sub-program has completed execution, local variables are removed from memory.

How do you limit the scope of a variable?

Maintainability benefits

Changes can be made to sub-programs without affecting the rest of the program.

· Code written within a sub-program can be re-used multiple times. · allows fewer lines of code to be typed. This removes repetition by calling the same sub-program more than once (with different actual parameters)

· Each sub-program can be tested separately making it easier to locate errors and debug.

· Different programmers can work on different sub-programs simultaneously. · Local variables and formal parameters within sub programs can have the same name without clashing with other sub programs. · Local variables can only be accessed within their own sub-program preventing unexpected changes in other parts of the main code.
