What is relief rainfall?

When warm moist winds blow from the sea, goes up the mountain because warm air will rise, then as it rises it cools and evaporates to form clouds. When the clouds are full, precipitation or rainfall happens.

Why does the Leeward side gets little or no rain?

Because by the time the wind travels from the windward side to the leeward side there is very little moisture left and so the dry air cannot go up to the clouds.

Do you get more rain the higher up you go on the windward side?

Yes, you get more rain because the temperature is colder the higher you go and so more water vapour condenses and forms cloud and so you get more rain

How do mountains affect temperature?

The higher the mountain area the colder it gets. Kingston will be hotter than Mandeville. For every 100 metres you go above sea level, the temperature is 0.65 degrees celcius cooler.

Is the air thicker or thinner on a mountain?

It is thinner because it holds less water and so absorbs less heat.

Humidity refers to the amount of water vapor, the gaseous form of water, present in the air. It indicates how much moisture is in the air and can affect how warm or cold it feels.

How do mountains affect humidity?

The higher you go the more humid the air is because it is moist with water coming from the sea. Humidity is lower in Kingston. Humidity is usually higher in the morning than in the afternoon because there is no sunshine to dry out the moisture

Mountains support forests which prevent soil erosion, helps to keep our climate cooler and wetter, produce oxygen, help to cleanse the air and also store carbon dioxide which helps to prevent global warming The timber from trees are used to make furniture, charcoal for cooking and other things. We also use wild food, such as honey, fruits and fungi from forests. People use wild plants as medicines.

For wildlife, and as sources of timber, fuel, food and medicines. Jamaica has many endangered wildlife such as the Jamaican parrot, hummingbirds and the coney.

The 4th reason mountains are important is?

For tourism - Some tourists like to spend time in natural areas that are quiet and unpolluted. They visit the waterfalls and caves. Some people hike, canoe on the white river.

The 5th reason mountains are important is?

For farming - crops such as coffee, cocoa and strawberries do not grow well in the hotter regions. They grow best in the mountains as it is cooler. Coffee is grown on the Leeward side of the mountain to protect it from the wind. This provides a lot of jobs, Blue Mountain Coffee is famous. Cocoa bears seeds called cocoa beans

How are mountains protected?

By forest reserves - The forestry department is trying to protect our ecosystem. The first forest reserves Blue mountain, Clydesdale and Hardware Gap were declared in 1950. Today there are over 100. Forest reserves are established under the 1996 Forestry Act.

Deforestation, Overgrazing and Poor ploughing practices. All lead to soil erosion

What are the main causes of deforestation?

Building Settlements - Tourist facilities may remove trees. More presence of people in the mountains can disturb wildlife and create pollution and soil erosion. Tourism - Forest fires due to camping, pollution, littering of garbage. creating walking trails disturbs the habitat. pollution, overuse of rivers and disturb fish and wildlife. Farming - on mountain slopes can cause erosion and landslides.

What are the ways to fix the negative effects of human activity in mountain environments?

Conservation - educating people, put in rules not to slash and burn. Ban people from doing certain activities in the mountains. Protect the areas - Forest reserves, national parks with strict regulations Buffer zones - only a certain area can be used. The inner area gets protected. Farming - teach them terrace farming, contour ploughing, mulching, retaining trees and no overgrazing - to conserve the soil and prevent excessive water run-off. Careful management of timber extraction Alternative energy sources - wind or solar made cheaply to prevent trees being used. Strict planning regulations - prevent building of new roads and living areas Reforestation - replanting of trees Careful management of tourism - less negative effects when ecotourism is done

It is tourism which tries not to damage the environment. When Visitors stay in small villages it can provide employment such as being a forest guide.

Fact about Mt Everest

It is 8848 metres high. The first people to climb it were Edmund Hilary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953.

A plateau is are areas of high land with a flat top and steep sides. The highest plateau in the world is the Tibetan Plateau, 5000 metres above sea level.
