The turning point, or the highest point in the action of a story.

Conflicts are resolved and loose ends are tied up.

The time and place in which a story occurs.

A struggle between opposing forces. Conflict can be internal or external.

Conversation between 2 or more characters.

The perspective from which a story is told. (1st person, 3rd person limited, 3rd person omniscient)

Narrator is a character in the story; readers learn information from his/her perspective. (Uses I, me, my, we, us)

Narrator is not a character in the story; focuses on the thoughts/feelings of just one character.

3rd Person Omniscient

Narrator is outside the story but knows the thoughts/feelings of all characters in the story.

The feeling that a literary work conveys to readers such as sadness, excitement, or anger.

Section of the plot leading up to the climax when tension is increased.

Section of the plot after the climax where tensions begin to decline.

A comparison of two unlike things using “like,” “as,” or “than.”

A figure of speech in which two unlike things are compared without using “like,” “as,” or “than.” Metaphors usually say something IS something else as a means of comparison.

Language that appeals to any of the 5 senses to help a reader visualize setting, character, etc. in literature.

Literary device of giving a non-human thing a human quality.

Repeating the same words or sounds.

A type of poetry that tells a story.

Words that illustrate or reflect the sound they make (Boom!, Pow!, Hiss!).

The author’s attitude toward his/her subject in a piece of writing (positive, negative, neutral).

The repetition of beginning consonant sounds in words or phrases (Big, Brown Bear Blowing Bubbles).

Occurs when a poem has lines ending with words that sound the same.

The pattern of rhyme at the ends of lines in a poem.

A warning or clue about a future event in a literary work.

The author’s reason for writing a work (to entertain, persuade, inform, etc.).

The most important idea that a writer wishes to express. It might be the important idea of an entire work or the important thought in a single paragraph.

To locate textual “proof” to support a central idea. Evidence can be a direct quote or a paraphrase (put info in your own words) from the text.

To condense a writer’s ideas into your own words. Objective means that no emotions or opinions are given in the summary - just the facts.

Refers to the organization of a nonfiction text. (sequence, cause/effect, problem/solution, description, compare/contrast).

A reference to a well-known person, event, place, work of literature, etc. in a literary work.

Use of words/phrases around the unknown word that helps us to figure out the meaning.

The dictionary definition of a word.

The emotions associated with a word. Ex. dangerous = negative connotation; celebration = positive connotation.

A conclusion based on information we are given.

To give hints/clues without making a direct statement.

Clearly stated; should be no confusion.

Give more information or description.

Favoring one idea over another.
