A sole trader is an individual operating as a self-employed worker, taking on smaller contracts like plastering, painting, and tiling. They may work as sub-contractors for larger companies or team up with other sole traders for larger contracts.

Contractors may take on projects of varying size and scope, including: - Individual construction projects like building houses and extensions - Specializing in specific construction work such as carpentry or bricklaying - Working as sub-contractors to larger contractors - Collaborating with other contractors for larger projects

Contractors are sometimes referred to as a ‘Small or Medium-sized Enterprise’ (SME) or a ‘major contractor’ according to their size and capability.

An SME could take on a project such as constructing an individual house or a small development of several houses. A major contractor might take on a large-scale project such as an office block. Some major projects are referred to as ‘prestige’ or ‘statement’ buildings.
