What does 'SSD/SSDI/Title II' stand for and what does it mean?

Back

Social Security Disability Insurance – “insurance-based” disability program; a claimant must have enough “credits” earned from working and paying the FICA taxes that fund this program. Once a worker has paid enough into the system, he/she is considered “insured” for Title II benefits and may apply for them. Title II benefits are not needs-based, so there are no income or resources limits considered for eligibility. The medical criteria are the same as Title XVI: the claimant must suffer from a long-term or permanent disability that totally limits him/her from working for a period of 12 consecutive months or longer.
