What caused Bacon's Rebellion?

Indentured servants were treated badly and many died before their contract ended. The House of Burgesses was comprised of rich land owners who did not protect the indentured servants so they rebelled.

Puritans wanted to live strictly and to purify the church as Christians living without sin. They came as families and sacrificed for the common good. The pilgrims wanted religious freedom by separating from the church of England and were more radical.

Describe the importance of the Mayflower Compact.

This was signed by the Pilgrims as they came to Plymouth. The agreed to work together under a set of laws that they created. It was the first representative government in the new world.

Connecticut was the first colony to give America a written constitution. It was called the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut.

It was a war between the Wampanoag tribe led by Metacomet against the colonists in New England. They did not want them on their land. The colonists ended up winning, but they lost nearly 20% (1,000) of their men.

What is Salutary Neglect?

It was the approach that England to took to governing the colonies for many years before the French and Indian War. They allowed the colonists to rule themselves and govern themselves as long as they continued to trade and provide natural resources to England. (they left them alone)

What is Mercantilism?

It is an economic plan to create wealth by having more exports than imports. You have to have resources/raw materials in order for this to work.

What impact did the Navigation Acts have on the British Colonists?

England placed the Navigation Acts on the Colonies to control trade. It said that the colonies were only allowed to trade England. (it lead to smuggling resources to other places to make money)

The Great Awakening. It was a religious movement saying that people should form their own relationship with God and how to worship him, not to only listen to church leaders.

Being able to work hard and move up the social class. Going from poor to rich as Benjamin Franklin did.

Benjamin Franklin. He was poor when he was young and worked hard to become rich. He was an individual because he left home in Boston to move to Philadelphia when he was only 17.

The settlers were inexperienced with farming and their attitudes affected their success. Also infectious diseases and Native American attacks hurt them as well.

It was a form of self government and showed that the colonists wanted to rule themselves in the colonies.

Why was New England's economy different from the Southern Colonies?

New England had rocky soil that was not good for farming. They had lots of forests so lumber was used to make ships. In the Southern Colonies the soil was fertile, so farming was how they made money. The geographic conditions in each region made their choices different.

It was the most popular style of house in the Southern United States from the end of the American Civil War (1861-65), through the 1920s. (Fun fact Elvis Presley grew up in one as a small child in Tupelo, Mississippi)
