Any of the numbers that are added together.

Example: In 8 + 3 = 11, the 8 and the 3 are addends.

The result of adding two or more numbers.

Example: 9 is the sum of 2, 4 and 3
(because 2 + 4 + 3 = 9).

Place Value

The value of where a digit is in the number.

Example: In 352, the 5 is in the "tens" place, so its place value is 10

Example: In 17.591, the 9 is in the "hundredths" place, so its place value is 0.01

Expanded Notation

Writing a number to show the value of each digit.

It is shown as a sum of each digit multiplied by its matching place value (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.)

For example: 4,265 = 4 × 1,000 + 2 × 100 + 6 × 10 + 5 × 1

To find a value that is close enough to the right answer, usually with some thought or calculation involved.

Example: Alex estimated there were 10,000 sunflowers in the field by counting one row then multiplying by the number of rows.

Regrouping

Moving an amount (usually 10) from one part of a calculation to another so it is easier to do the calculation.

Example: 32 − 15
How do we subtract 5 from 2?
We "regroup" 32 (3 tens and 2 ones) into 2 tens and 12 ones
NOW we can subtract 5 from 12 and get 7
And finish up by subtracting 1 ten from 2 tens
To get our answer of 17
