Decimal (Number)

A number that has a decimal point followed by digits showing the fractional part.

Example decimal numbers:

0.01 (point zero one) which is also equal to 1/100

45.6 (forty-five point six) which is also equal to 45 and 6/10

A point (small dot) used to separate the whole number part from the fractional part of a number.

Example: in the number 36.9 the decimal point separates the 36 (the whole number part) from the 9 (the fractional part, which really means 9 tenths).

So 36.9 is 36 and nine tenths.

One part in ten equal parts.

A tenth of these 100 blocks is highlighted.

Example: one tenth of 50 is 5

Can be written 1/10 or 1/10th

One part in a hundred equal parts.

1/100th

Example: 1 cent is a hundredth of 1 dollar

Example: 0.01 is a hundredth shown as a decimal

Example: 1% is a hundredth shown as a percentage

One part in a thousand equal parts: 1/1000th

Example: 1 meter is a thousandth of 1 kilometer

The value of where a digit is in the number.

Example: In 352, the 5 is in the "tens" place, so its place value is 10

Example: In 17.591, the 9 is in the "hundredths" place, so its place value is 0.01

There is no fractional or decimal part. And no negatives.

Example: 5, 49 and 980 are all whole numbers.
