Purpose: Explain why the colonies wanted to be independent. Formally announced the colonies' break from Great Britain.

Three sections:

  1. 1. All people possess unalienable rights

  2. 2. Grievances the colonists had against King George III and Parliament.

  3. 3. Colonies had the right to break away from Great Britain. Governments and rulers must protect the rights of citizens. In exchange, citizens agree to be governed. King George had broken that contract.
