Cell Biology Flashcards

Front

Cell Theory

Back

1. All living things are made of cells. 2. Cells are the basic unit of life. 3. All cells come from pre-existing cells.

Front

Basic Unit of Life

Back

The cell is the smallest unit capable of performing all life functions.

Front

Prokaryote

Back

Cell without a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles (e.g., bacteria).

Front

Eukaryote

Back

Cell with a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles (e.g., plants, animals).

Front

Examples of Prokaryotes

Back

Bacteria like E. coli.

Front

Examples of Eukaryotes

Back

Human, animal, and plant cells.

Front

Microscope Total Magnification

Back

Multiply ocular lens (10x) by objective lens (e.g., 40x = 400x).

Front

How to Focus a Microscope

Back

Start on low power, use coarse focus, then fine focus; center specimen before switching to higher power.

Front

Nucleus

Back

Controls the cell; contains DNA.

Front

Cytoplasm

Back

Jelly-like fluid that holds organelles.
