Nouns

What are nouns?

• actions that are present in the sentence.

• words that name persons, place, things, or ideas.

• words that describe the persons, place, things or ideas.

• words that exist in a sentence to show action.

Types of Nouns

• Abstract Nouns: Name of ideas: ex. fear, cleverness, misery.

• Concrete Nouns: Names of things that can be identified with the five senses: ex. trumpet, street, tortilla.

• Proper Nouns: Name of particular persons, place, or things. Always capitalized: ex. New Jersey.

• Common Nouns: General and not capitalized. Ex. city, turnpike, attorney.

Types of Nouns

• Collective Nouns: Name a group of people, animals, or things. Ex. squad, class, flock.

• Compound Nouns: consists of two or more words. Some words use a hyphen. Ex. great-aunt, one-fourth, horseradish.

• Noun Phrase: A noun and its modifier. Ex. the young girl, several children.

Plural and Possessive Nouns

Possessive Nouns: something belongs to the subject. 

• Add an apostrophe and an -s after the noun: Maria = Maria's car

• If it is plural (the noun has an -s), add the apostrophe after the noun: winners = winners' blue uniform

Indefinite Pronouns

• Express an amount or to refer to an unspecified person or thing.

Reflexive/Intensive Pronouns

• Reflexive Pronouns: refers to an earlier noun or pronouns.

• Example: I love myself.

• Intensive Pronouns: to add emphasis.

• Example: The principal himself taught the class.

Reciprocal Pronouns

• Express mutual action or relation.

• Example: Teammates rely on one another for support during a game.

Pronouns Must Agree!
