Integers

*Integers are positive and negative whole numbers.

*In order to solve one step equations, you need to be able to complete operations with integers (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing).

Important Vocabulary for Equations

  • Variable –  is a symbol, commonly a single letter, that represents a number.

  • Coefficient - A number used to multiply a variable. Example: 6z means 6 times z, and "z" is a variable, so 6 is a coefficient.

  • Constant - is a number on its own

Solving Equations

  • When solving equations, think of the equation as a scale.  Each side of the equals sign must remain “balanced.”

  • Whatever you do to one side, you MUST do it to the other.

  • The goal of solving equations is to get one variable by itself on one side of the equals sign.

  • You will use inverse operations to "undo" the problem to solve for the variable.
