Facts about the Earth

  • The Earth's rotation is gradually slowing.

  • The Earth was once believed to be the centre of the universe.

  • Earth has a powerful magnetic field.

  • There is only one natural satellite of the planet Earth.

  • Earth is the only planet not named after a god.

  • The Earth is the densest planet in the Solar System.

Earth's Wiki

Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only astronomical object known to harbor life. According to radiometric dating estimation and other evidence, Earth formed over 4.5 billion years ago. Earth's gravity interacts with other objects in space, especially the Sun and the Moon, which is Earth's only natural satellite. Earth orbits around the Sun in 365.256 solar days, a period known as an Earth sidereal year. During this time, Earth rotates about its axis 366.256 times; that is, a sidereal year has 366.256 sidereal days.

How much sea covers Earth?

The ocean covers more than 70 percent of the surface of our planet. It's hard to imagine, but about 97 percent of the Earth's water can be found in our ocean. Of the tiny percentage that's not in the ocean, about two percent is frozen up in glaciers and ice

Earth's Natural Disasters

What causes all of these destructive Earth disasters?

9

Natural Disasters List

  • Earthquakes

  • Volcanoes

  • Landslides

  • Famines & Droughts

  • Hurricanes, Tornados, and Cyclones.

  • Extreme precipitation and flooding

  • Extreme Temperature (Heat & Cold) Wildfires.

10

Tornadoes and Hurricanes

Hurricanes are formed over warm water in tropical oceans while tornadoes are formed over land. Hurricanes develop when they are far away from a jet stream and tornadoes are formed within storms very close to those jet streams.

Earthquakes

Natural events such as volcanic eruptions and meteor impacts can cause earthquakes, but the majority of naturally-occurring earthquakes are triggered by movement of the earth's plates. The earth's surface consists of 20 constantly moving plates. The pressure increase from shifting plates can cause the crust to break.

Wildfires

A wildfire, wildland fire or rural fire is an uncontrolled fire in an area of combustible vegetation occurring in rural areas. Depending on the type of vegetation present, a wildfire can also be classified more specifically as a brush fire, bushfire (in Australia), desert fire, forest fire, grass fire, hill fire, peat fire, prairie fire, vegetation fire, or veld fire.

Natural Disaster's Wiki

A natural disaster is a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth; examples are floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, and other geologic processes. A natural disaster can cause loss of life or damage property, and typically leaves some economic damage in its wake, the severity of which depends on the affected population's resilience and also on the infrastructure available. An adverse event will not rise to the level of a disaster if it occurs in an area without vulnerable population. In a vulnerable area, however, such as Nepal during the 2015 earthquake, an earthquake can have disastrous consequences and leave lasting damage, which can require years to repair.
