What does it mean to conjugate?

• In English as well as Spanish we have verbs. 

• The base verb in English looks like this:

• These are called infinitives because they have no subjects.

Name another infinitive in English...

Infinitives are verbs that have no subjects. 

• In other words, if I say "to dance", nobody is dancing. 

• I would have to conjugate the infinitive in order to give it a subject. 

• To do this, I would replace the word "TO" with a subject pronoun. 

• So if "HE" is the one doing the dancing, I would say "HE DANCES".

Conjugating

• So, if "he" is the one who is dancing, I would replace the word "to" with the subject pronoun "he"                  (remember your subject is the one doing the action). 

• Notice how "dance" became "dances". 
  

• "Dances" is the conjugated form of "Dance" (the verb)

• The subject is "he".
