Objectives
Describe the subatomic particles
Distinguish between the three subatomic particles.
4
Review
All matter is composed of atoms.
Atoms are extremely small.
5
Subatomic Particles
Atoms are made of super small particles called subatomic particles.
Subatomic literally means smaller than an atom.
6
Subatomic Particles
3 Types
Protons
Electrons
Neutrons
7
Subatomic Particles
Atoms are made of the subatomic particles.
Protons and neutrons are in the center of the atom. The center of the atom is called the nucleus.
Electrons move around the outside layer of the atom. This area is called the electron cloud
8
Protons
Protons are in the center of the atom.
Protons have a positive (+) charge (think of a magnet).
9
Neutrons
Neutrons have a neutral (zero) charge.
Neutrons are located in the center of the atom.
10
Electrons
Electrons are located on the outside of the atom.
This area is referred to as the electron cloud or as orbits.
The electrons have a negative charge and move around the nucleus.
