Recap: What are some examples of ways our bodies respond to stimuli?

4

The basic unit of our nervous system is a nerve cell or neuron.

It is believed we have up to 100 billion neurons in our bodies, connected in paths called nerves.

5

Neurons have highly specialised features

Each neuron has:
- A large cell body
- A long thin axon (connected to the cell body)

Axons carry nerve impulses away from the cell body to the end (synaptic terminal) where the message passes to the next neuron.

6

Nerves are like electrical wires

  • Myelin Sheath are a fatty layer which act as insulation for the nerve

  • Myelin sheaths help speed up nerve impulses along an axon.

7

Dendrites

  • Dendrites are the nerve endings which branch of the cell body.

  • Dendrites receive information and form contacts with the axons from other neurons.

8

How information is passed

  • Dendrites bring information from the cell body and axons take the information away from the cell body.

  • Information from one neuron flows to another across a synapse (a small gap separating neurons)

9

Neuron Communication

1.Electrical impulse triggers the release of the neurotransmitter
2.The neurotransmitter diffuses across the synapse
3.The neurotransmitter attaches to the receptor on the target cell and triggers a response.
4. the neurotransmitter is deactivated

Sensory Neurons

Receptors on senses detect stimuli from the body's internal environment or the outside world

Sensory neurons pass this infomration towards the Central Nervous System

11

Interneurons

- Link sensory and motor neurons.
- Most common neuron in tour body.
- Only makes connections with other nerons.

12

Motor Neurons

Pass information from the central nervous system to muscle cells which carry out a response.
