1
Tells you where something is in relationship to something else.
Usually given using the cardinal directions or by description
Subheader text
Tells you an EXACT location, you ABSOLUTELY know where it is.
Usually given as an address or a coordinate
Absolute Location
Types of Location
2
Open Ended
Give the ABSOLUTE Location of where you live.
3
Open Ended
Give the RELATIVE Location of where you live.
4
Latitude and Longitude Practice
5
How to find Latitude
Latitude is always measured from North or South of the equator (0 degrees)
The lines of latitude run horizontally (Latitude Flat-itude)
To find latitude, follow the lines horizontally with your mouse from out point to the number of degrees on the side of the map
In the picture, our point at 20 degrees North- always remember to include the cardinal directions
6
Multiple Choice
Latitude is always measured (1)_________ or (2)__________ of the Equator (0 degrees).
(1) North (2) South
(1) East (2) West
7
How to measure longitude
Lines of longitude are measured vertically (up and down)
You measure lines of Longitude from the East or West of the Prime Meridian (0 degrees)
You find the degrees of Longitude the same as you do Latitude except you move your mouse vertically
Our point is 60 degrees East
8
Multiple Choice
You measure Longitude from the East or West of the Prime Meridian (0 degrees). True or False?
True
False
9
So how do we put it all together?
Putting latitude and longitude together gives you coordinates that lead to a specific point/location
Always list latitude first! And always include your cardinal directions! If you don't you could be talking about 4 different points
The point on our map is at (20 degrees North, 60 degrees East)
10
Sometimes latitude and longitude will not be exactly on one of the drawn out lines- Here's what to do!
You've got to do a little math (sorry!)
On this map we can see that the point is between 110 and 120 degrees W- so we need to find the middle point: 115 degrees W
11
Let's do some practice questions!
12
Multiple Choice
What are the coordinates for the point (Portland) on this map?
(46 degrees N, 121 degrees W)
(30 degrees N, 50 degrees W)
(121 degrees W, 46 degrees N)
(40 degrees N, 90 degrees W)
13
Multiple Choice
What at the coordinates for the point on this map?
(40 degrees S, 120 degrees E)
(30 degrees N, 80 degrees E)
(30 degrees S, 80 degrees W)
60 degrees S, 120 degrees E)
