 Zazwyczaj wyróżniamy trzy tzw. stopnie

• równy –  coś może być: małe, duże, stare, niebezpieczne, interesujące, itd.

•  wyższy – coś jest `bardziej`, czyli np. młodsze, starsze, bardziej interesujące albo bardziej niebezpieczne

• stopień najwyższy – tutaj wiemy, że coś jest `naj` – najlepsze, największe, najstarsze, itd.

Przy przymitonikach krótkich używamy:

• -er - w stopniu wyższym

• -est - w stopniu najwyższym
