THE SHOOT SYSTEM

Shoot System - is the part of a plant that generally present above the soil. It consist of stem, branches, leaves, buds, flowers and fruits.

3

Stem - is the main part of the shoot system.
-It is usually located above the ground and bears the branches, leaves, buds, flowers and fruits.
-It forms the backbone of the shoot system. STEMS Divided into 2-parts

  • Node- A point in the stem where a leaf, a branch or a bud arises.

  • Internode-the portion of the stem between two nodes.

Label the following parts of a shoot system in the picture. Write no. 1. ______(answer) 2. ______(answer),3. _______, 4. ___________, 5. ___________, 6._______

6

A stem has 2 main functions

  • It keeps the plant upright

  • It helps in transportation of water, minerals and food to all other plant parts.

7

Multiple Select

Choose the 2 main functions of stem.

1

It gives beauty to the plant

2

it keeps the plant erect

3

It absorb water from the soil

4

It transports the water and mineral to all other parts of the plants

8

Thus, stem transport water and minerals and food from the roots to the parts of the plant.

  • Xylem- is a thin tubes in the stem that carried up the water and minerals to other parts of the plants.

  • Phloem - another set of tubes in the stem used for transporting food prepared by leaves to the other parts of the plant.

9

Fill in the Blank

It is the set of tubes in stem used for transporting food prepared from leaves to other parts of the plants.

10

Modifications of Stem

  • Support                                                                                                           **Tendrils

  • Storage                                                                                                examples ginger, potato and onion

  • Making Food                                                                                    examples: cactus, and other desert plants

11

Fill in the Blank

This is one of the stem modification in which stem will take over the function of manufacturing food is called _______

12

Fill in the Blank

__________ of a stem is a slight change of stem due to special function of it.

13

The Leaf

Leaves are responsible for carrying out the process of photosynthesis by which plants manufacture their own food.
-Leaves differs in shape and size
VARIOUS TYPES OF LEAVES
**Lamina-  is the flat broad part of the leaf
-Lamina receives solar radiation which is used in photosynthesis.
- Lamina is attached to the stem with the help of small stalk called petiole.
-Veins is a small lines on the leaves. The veins are responsible for the transfer of water and minerals in the leaves.
-Midrib- is a thicker line or vein in the middle of the leaves.
-Venation- are veins that are arrange in specific pattern on a leaf.

Label the parts of a Leaf 1. _______, 2_________ 3. ______

18

Modifications of Leaves

1. Leaves are modified into Spine leaves such as cactus  which grows in the desert place where there are scarcity of water.

Slide image

19

2. Insectivorous Plants-such as Pitcher plant, the leaf is modified to form a pitcher for capturing insects

Slide image

20

3. Tendrils- is the tip of leaves is modified provide extra support to the plant. example: Garden Pea

21

Fill in the Blank

The cactus leaves change to ________ leaves due to the scarcity of water in the area.

22

Fill in the Blank

________ plant is an example of an insectivorous plant.

23

FLOWER

A flower  is the reproductive part of the plant.
- It is the most attractive part of a plant.
-It bears the reproductive structures inside.

Slide image

24

Structure of a Flower

  • Sepals- are the outermost layer of the flower.

  • Petals- inside the sepals you will see a layer of brightly coloured modified leaves.

  • Stamens- the male reproductive parts of a flower. -Anther- the part of a stamen that contains the pollen and the upper flat part of stamens. -Filament     -consists of a slender stalk and it supports the anther, which is where pollen develops.

  • Pistil- is the female reproductive organ. Parts: stigma, style, ovary, ovule
