HOW DO WE REDUCE WASTE AT HOME AND THE COMMUNITY?

Every day around 35,000 tons of garbage are collected all around the country, 8,600 tons of this is collected in Manila alone. this is a major problem that we encounter today because most of these wastes are non-biodegradable; they pose risks not only to our environment but also to our health.

Segregation of our garbage reduces tons of our solid wastes. To segregate materials, we must identity first their properties, like being metal, plastic or non-biodegradable. Based on these we could now identity which materials could be used, reduce, or even sent to recycling facilities.

An MRF or a Materials Recovery Facility is a plant that recovers, sorts and reprocesses wastes from the community to be used by different manufacturers.

REPAIR

means to fix things that are broken to use them again. If things can't be repaired or if it will cost a lot repairing them it is much better to take them into an MRF so that other parts of the materials that could still be used will be recovered.

REDUCE

simply means to lessen the usage of materials that are disposable or that could only be used once.

REUSE

means to use again for other purposes.

RECYCLE

to process or to alter the material so it could be used again.

to fix the material and restore it to its original state.

means to obtain energy or a part of the material for creating other material or to be used for the purpose.

It is important that we learn how to properly dispose our garbage to prevent pollution of the environment, to keep us safe from harm and diseases and to earn money from these wastes
