Noun Definition

A noun is a word that refers to a thing (book), a person (Betty Crocker), an animal (cat), a place (Omaha), a quality (softness), an idea (justice)

Noun Categories

  • Proper Nouns: a name used for an individual person(Lebron James), place(Millsboro), or organization(the Celtics), spelled with initial capital letters

  • Common Nouns: Common nouns are words used to name general items rather than specific ones. Go into your living room. What do you see? A lamp, chair, couch, TV, window, painting, pillow, candle – all of these items are named using common nouns.

  • Pronouns: are words that are used in place of or in reference to other nouns. i.e. I, me, him, her, us, we, they, them, it.
