Author's Purpose

When authors sit down to write, they need to know why they are writing and what they hope to accomplish; this is the author’s purpose. Learning to recognize and identify the reason an author writes will help you understand the text and what the author hopes you get out of it.

Fiction Vs. Nonfiction

  • Fiction: made up stories usually with characters and a plot

  • Nonfiction: text made up of facts

Determining author's purpose is an important skill to learn and it helps to look at the genre.

  • If the genre is fiction, generally the literary text is to entertain. Novels, plays, poetry, and short stories are written to entertain.

  • If the genre is nonfiction, the author most likely wants to inform. Biographies, autobiographies, encyclopedias, newspaper articles, directions, and recipes are nonfiction.

  • Persuasive texts try to convince the reader to believe a certain way or agree with an opinion. Advertisements on television, radio stations, or in magazines are informational texts authors use to persuade. *There is a call to action*

Although a reader may find a story on the sports page entertaining, its genre would be nonfiction. That is why you learn to look at the text from the author’s perspective. The acronym PIE is a helpful tool for distinguishing between author's purpose.

P stands for persuade, I stands for inform, and

Stated Purpose vs. Implied Purpose

  • Stated Purpose is when the author explains their reason for writing the text; look at the beginning paragraphs

  • The text structure will sometimes clue you into the purpose: Informative texts will have a different text structure than narrative texts

  • Informative texts will be formatted in cause and effect relationships, problem and solution, compare and contrast, and sequence of events. Most will have a stated purpose.

  • Implied Purpose is when the reader uses clues that the author provides to figure out the purpose. Most fiction stories are written with implied purpose.

Amelia Earhart was one of the first female pilots in the world. In 1937, she decided to fly around the world. In March of that year, she flew to Hawaii with fellow pilot Paul Mantz to begin this flight. Earhart lost control of the plane on takeoff, however, and the plane had to be sent to the factory for repairs. In June, she went to Miami to again begin a flight around the world, this time with Fred Noonan as her navigator. The pair made it to New Guinea in 21 days, even though Earhart was tired and ill. During the next leg of the trip, they departed New Guinea for Howland Island, a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. July 2, 1937, was the last time Earhart and Noonan communicated with a nearby Coast Guard ship. They were never heard from again. What do you think happened?
