What do you need to know from Chapter 1

  • We really skimmed the characteristics of life since you've seen these before multiple times. Just be familiar with them.

  • Same thing with regards to the scientific method.

3

What do you need to know from Chapter 2

  • Know patterns we discussed on the periodic table and have a version ready. Mine may be hard to read on the screen while taking the test.

  • Know details of bonding types - ionic, polar covalent, non-polar covalent, and hydrogen

  • Understand the basics of radioactivity, half-life, and isotopes.

  • I am assuming that you know some basic words such as reactants, products, ions,...

4

What do you need to know from Chapter 3

  • Focus on this chapter since water is so important.

  • Know the vocabulary (See the Slide Show.).

  • We did not discuss heat capacity, yet, but it is the ability of water to hold its temperature.

  • You will be given a real life problem to "figure out."

5

What do you need to know from Chapter 4

  • You will be given a super, duper, ugly, nasty organic molecule and you will need to i.d. five (5) functional groups, so have those flash cards ready.

  • Understand and be able to i.d. the different types of isomers.

  • You will be asked to i.d. dehydration (synthesis), anabolism, condensation/hydrolysis, and catabolism reactions.

  • Know all of these terms.

6

What do you need to know from Chapter 5

  • Know your macromolecules and monomers.

  • Know the terms.

  • Know the details.

  • Have I made it obvious enough that you need to know this chapter?

7

What you need to know from the beginning-ish of Chapter 8

  • Understand the whole concept of Kinetic Molecular Theory - things move all the time.

  • We can manipulate this to increase or decrease the chances that a chemical reaction will occur.

  • Understand the impact that enzymatic catalysts and ribozymes have on Eaf and Ear.

  • Know that chemical evolution lead to biological evolution.

8

Unit 1 Test

  • I wrote the questions, so don't bother trying to find them online. Yes, the test questions for the textbook and answers became easier to find last year on line.

  • Yes, the test questions for the textbook and answers became easier to find last year on line.

  • The questions will be a combination of multiple choice, check all that apply, and short response.

  • I do go by the college/university adage of select the BEST answer of those that are given.

  • If you have questions, email me.
