RAGE

Let's learn and practice!

Slide image

2

What is RAGE?

  • RAGE is a writing process you use to answer an academic question with your opinion.

  • You must make the reader believe that your opinion is true.

  • You do this by giving PROOF/EVIDENCE and supporting it with an EXPLANATION.

  • It's not as difficult as it sounds!

3

What is the RAGE process?

  • R = Reword/restate the question: change the question into a statement.

  • A = Answer the question: say what you believe to be the correct answer, be general and don't give details

  • Gp? = Give an example/evidence to support your answer: a fact (event or dialogue) from the text or story that shows what you believe. Include the page number.

  • E2+ = Explain it!: Say how your Example shows your Answer is correct, and why you know there is a connection. 2 or more sentences.

4

Let's practice R: Reword the question.

  • On the next page is a RAGp?E2+ question based on our reading book, Kensuke's Kingdom. It is about Michael's football team, the Mudlarks (p3).

  • Your task is to change the question into a statement. DON'T try to answer the question yet!

  • Tip! Just remove all the question words and character, but keep it past tense!

  • Be careful with spelling, punctuation, capitalisation etc. The answer will show as wrong if you make a mistake!

5

Fill in the Blank

Make this question into a statement (don't try to answer it):

Why did the Mudlarks win most of their football matches at home?

6

Let's practice A: Answer the question.

  • On the next page, choose the best answer to the question (the information is in KK p3).

  • REMEMBER! The answer must be general and not include proof/details, we'll do that in G.

  • The academic word 'because' has been added to R.

7

Multiple Choice

The Mudlarks won most of their football matches at home because

1

they knew a secret about their own football pitch.

2

their football pitch was muddy.

3

they were playing on their own football pitch.

4

the Mudlarks knew that the ball wouldn't bounce in the mud.

8

Let's practice Gp?: Give an example

  • On the next page, choose the best example (from KK p3) to support the answer A to the question.

  • REMEMBER! Now we can use some detail, we can take text directly from the book. It shouldn't be confusing or too long, but it must support your answer A.

  • It should also include the page number p?.

  • The academic words 'for example' have been added to R.A.

9

Multiple Choice

The Mudlarks won most of their football matches at home because they knew a secret about their own football pitch. For example,

1

"After school everyday, whatever the weather, I’d be off down to the recreation ground for football with Eddie Dodds..." (p3).

2

"It was muddy down there. Cross the ball and it would just land and stick." (p3).

3

"Visiting teams seemed to expect the ball to bounce for some reason, and by the time they realised it didn’t, we were often two or three goals up." (p3).

4

"It was muddy down there. Cross the ball and it would just land and stick [...] by the time visiting teams realised it didn’t, we were often two or three goals up." (p3).

10

Let's practice E2+: Explain

  • Ok, so far you should have this RAG;

  • The Mudlarks won most of their football matches at home because they knew a secret about their own football pitch. For example, "It was muddy down there. Cross the ball and it would just land and stick [...] by the time visiting teams realised it didn’t, we were often two or three goals up." (p3).

  • Now we need to explain (E) this in at least two sentences;

  • #1. How does example G support answer A.

  • #2. What is the result of sentence #1.

11

Let's practice E2+: Explain Sentence #1

  • The first sentence of our explanation should show how our example G supports our answer A. Read them again, then go to the next slide.

  • Answer A is this;

  • ...because they knew a secret about their own football pitch.

  • The supporting example Gp? is this;

  • For example, "It was muddy down there. Cross the ball and it would just land and stick [...] by the time visiting teams realised it didn’t, we were often two or three goals up." (p3).

12

Multiple Choice

Choose the best E sentence #1 to show how G supports A.

The Mudlarks won most of their football matches at home because they knew a secret about their own football pitch. For example, "It was muddy down there. Cross the ball and it would just land and stick [...] by the time visiting teams realised it didn’t, we were often two or three goals up." (p3). This shows

1

that the Mudlarks' football pitch was always really muddy because it rained.

2

that the Mudlarks' had a game advantage because they knew the ball wouldn't bounce.

3

that the visiting teams would always lose to the Mudlarks because they were strangers.

4

that the ball would never bounce because it was too muddy.

13

Let's practice E: Explain Sentence #2

  • The second sentence of our explanation should show the RESULT of sentence #1

  • Sentence #1 is;

This shows that the Mudlarks' had a game advantage because they knew the ball wouldn't bounce.

  • So, what is the result of that? In detail, what does this allow them to do? Go to the next slide and choose the best answer.

14

Multiple Choice

Choose the best E sentence #2 to show the RESULT of E sentence #1

Sentence #1: This shows that the Mudlarks' had a game advantage because they knew the ball wouldn't bounce. We understand that

The result of this is...

1

it rained a lot where the Mudlarks played football.

2

the visiting teams would always lose.

3

they knew a secret about their own football pitch.

4

the secret knowledge allowed them to easily take control of the ball and score more goals.

15

Now we have all the parts of RAGE

Question:

Why did the Mudlarks win most of their football matches at home?

The Mudlarks won most of their football matches at home because they knew a secret about their own football pitch. For example, "It was muddy down there. Cross the ball and it would just land and stick [...] by the time visiting teams realised it didn’t, we were often two or three goals up." (p3). This shows that the Mudlarks' had a game advantage because they knew the ball wouldn't bounce. The secret knowledge allowed them to easily take control of the ball and score more goals.

16

Now it's your turn!

  • On the next slide you're going to answer the question below. The information you need is in Kensuke's Kingdom chapter 1, pages 9 to 11 (online pages 4 & 5).

  • Q: Why does Michael's father behave differently when the family meet in Southampton?

  • You have already partly answered this question in your Activity Booklet, chapter 1, L2 question 8. Use that for inspiration.

  • Remember the process, RAGp?E2+

17

Open Ended
