Poll
One of my teachers has taught me about C.E.R. before:
Yes
No
I'm not sure
3
C.E.R. is like R.A.C.E.
Both require you to answer the question
Both require evidence to support the answer
Both require reasoning to connect ideas
4
What does C.E.R. stand for?
Claim
Evidence
Reasoning
5
What is a Claim?
Your claim is like your answer.
It is what you are claiming to be the correct answer.
You are going to then prove your claim using Evidence and Reasoning.
Ex: What is the climax of the story?
The climax is when Mr. Bueller could embarrass Victor but chooses not to.
6
Multiple Choice
A claim is like your:
answer
evidence
reasoning
7
Evidence
Just like in R.A.C.E., you need to cite evidence.
Evidence will support your claim, proving why it is correct.
Ex: What is the climax of the story?
The climax is when Mr. Bueller could embarrass Victor but chooses not to. He remembers trying to impress a girl in his own past and can empathize with Victor. Victor is also pleading in his mind for Mr. Bueller not to embarrass him. It could go either way!
8
Multiple Select
Evidence (choose two):
Helps prove your claim is correct
Isn't something you need to provide
Provides support for your answer
9
Reasoning
Provides the support to show why your evidence is correct
Connects your evidence back to the question
Shows you understand how to make connections between ideas.
10
example:
The climax is when Mr. Bueller could embarrass Victor but chooses not to. He remembers trying to impress a girl in his own past and can empathize with Victor. Victor is also pleading in his mind for Mr. Bueller not to embarrass him. It could go either way! That makes it the climax because a climax is the most suspenseful part. The reader is on pins and needles, wondering what will happen. It is also the climax because it is the turning point. Everything changes after this point of the story. Victor can now offer to tutor Teresa in French.
