How to use "¿Qué?" & "¿Cuál?"

¿Qué? vs ¿Cuál?

These words can cause a little confusion as they are both question words and they can both be translated as 'what' or 'which' depending on the construction of the sentence.

Use ¿qué? to ask for definitions

¿Qué es esto? ^{What is this?}

¿Qué es paella? ^{What is paella?}

¿Qué significa plato? What does plato mean?

Use ¿qué? before verbs to ask what someone 'does' or 'is doing':

¿Qué haces? ^{What are you doing?}

¿Qué comes? ^{What do you eat?}

¿Qué escuchas? ^{Wha are you listening to?}

Use ¿qué? to ask what the time is:

¿Qué hora es? ^{What time is it?}

¿Qué horas son? W^{hat time is it?}

Use ¿Qué? before nouns even when it means 'which':

¿Qué plato prefieres? ^{Which dish do you prefer?}

¿Qué libro leíste? ^{Which book did you read?}

¿Qué número es?  ^{What number is it?}

¿Qué clase enseña Pablo?   ^{Which class does Pablo teach?}

¿Qué color prefieres?   ^{Which color do you prefer?}

Use ¿cuál? before 'es' to mean 'what' or 'which':

This works for all other forms of ser ^{to be} too, when you're 'not' asking for definition:

¿Cuál es tu dirección? ^{What is your address?}

¿Cuál es tu problema? ^{What is your problem?}

¿Cuáles son los países más grandes en el mundo? ^{Which are the biggest countries in the world?}

Use ¿cuál? when you want to suggest a selection or choice from among a group:

¿Cuál miras? ^{Which one are you looking at?}

¿Qué miras? ^{What are you looking at?}

¿Cuál prefiere Juan?  ^{Which one does Juan prefer?}

¿Qué prefieres Juan?  ^{What do you prefer, Juan?}

¿Cuáles quieren los niños?   ^{Which ones do the children want?}

¿Qué quieren los niños?  ^{What do the children want?}

¿Qué? doesn't change but ¿cuál? has a plural form, ¿cuáles?

¿Cuál es el más caro?   ^{Which is the most expensive (one)?}

¿Cuáles son los más caros?  ^{Which (ones) are the most expensive?}
