The Elements of Drama

Let's review the terms that were introduced last week.

What is a Drama?

• a piece of writing that tells a story and is acted out on a stage

• also known as a play

What are the Acts of a drama?

• the main sections of the drama

• like chapters in a book

• made of many scenes

What are Scenes?

• part of an act where specific events happen

• scenes change each time the setting changes

What is the Setting?

• when and where the story takes place

• Example: The City of Agrabah a place in the desert with a Middle Eastern look

• Example: A cave full of gold, jewels, and treasures

What are Stage Directions?

• specific instructions for the actors

• Example: (Aladdin walks over to the magic carpet, takes Jasmine's hand and leads her to sit on it with him)

What is Dialogue?

• the words spoken by the actors

• the dialogue is contained in the written version of the play called the Script

What is the Cast of Characters?

(Also known as the Cast)

• the actors in the play

• a character's name is shown in the script right before their lines of dialogue

• their words and actions tells us about their personality

What is a Protagonist?

• the "good guy in the story

• usually the main charcter

• Example: Aladdin

What is an Antagonist?

• the "bad" guy in the story

• usually casues some type of conflict for the protagonist

• Examples: Jafar, the Sea Witch, Scar, Gaston, the Wicked Stepmother, Sid, Darth Vader....

Who is the Playwright?

• The person who wrote the play

• Sometimes a different person writes the book and someone is hired to change it into a script
