You can replace nouns with pronouns.

  • Direct object pronouns replace the noun that receives the action of the verb.

  • It answers the question "what?" or "whom?".

  • Carlos eats the food. Carlos come la comida.

  • Carlos eats it. Carlos la come.

Do you see how the noun "peanuts" has been converted to the pronoun "them"?

  • Yo quiero los cacahuetes. I want the peanuts.

  • Yo los quiero. I want them.

Look how the noun "beach" has been changed to the pronoun "it".

  • Nosotros visitamos la playa. We visit the beach.

  • Nosotros la visitamos. We visit it.

Sometimes a sentence has two objects: a thing and a person.

  • Ella escribe una carta a mí. She is writing a letter to me.

  • Ella me escribe una carta. She is writing me a letter.

  • Ella me la escribe.

  • Command form: Escríbemela.

  • She buys us cake. (2 objects) Ella compra un pastel para nosotros. = Ella nos lo compra.

  • She is giving me the money. (2 objects) Ella me da el dinero.

  • I have the ticket for you. (2 objects) Te lo tengo. or Yo te lo tengo.

  • I have it. (1 object) Yo lo tengo.
