Adding Like Terms

Like terms - terms that have the same variable and the same powers

Ex. 5x and -7x

Ex. 3y² and 4y²

Combining Like Terms -- you can add/subtract the coefficients of like terms

• 5x-7x=-2x

• 3y²+4y² = 7y²

• 10x² +5x -2x² +3x=8x² +8x

• 7a + 2b -3c +2a-c = 9a +2b-4c

Your Turn:

• 7x² +5y -3x² -2y +2x

• =4x²-3y +2x

• 7a-2b+3c+2c-3b+8a

• =15a-5b+5c

Adding Subtracting Polynomials

• (3x² + 5x +2) + (8x² -2x +1)

• =11x²+3x+3

• (14y² -2y +6) - (3y² + 2y - 5)

• =(14y²-3y²) + (-2y -2y) +[6-(-5)]

• =11y²-4y+11

Distributive property

• Ex. 5(x-4)

• =5(x)-5(4)

• =5x-20

• Ex. x(4x+2)

• x(4x)+x(2)

• 4x²+2x
