The difference between sandy soil and clayey soil
Sandy soil has big grains. It lets the most water through because the spaces between the grains are big.
Clayey soil has the finest grains. It lets the least water through because the spaces between the grains are small.

Water in each type of soil
In clayey soil, water is absorbed slowly. Roots can have a hard time getting through this soil type
In sandy soil, water travels straight down. It can't keep water.
Loamy soil is made up of clay, silt and sand in equal amounts. The soil allows water to drain easily and holds just the right amount of nutrients and air.
