Adjective Agreement

• Adjectives are words that describe nouns.

• In Spanish, adjectives must reflect and match the gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural) of the noun they describe.

• Gender Agreement happens with the last letter of the word ending in -o (masculine) or -a (feminine) matches the gender of the person being described. (ex. Tom es alto. Ellie es alta.)

• Some Spanish adjectives don't show gender. (ex. inteligente)

Examples

• He is bald. - Él es calvo. (direct - 'bald' describes person)

• She has green eyes. - Ella tiene ojos verdes. (indirect- 'green' describes her eyes)

• He is redheaded. - Él es pelirrojo. (direct - 'redheaded' describes person) vs. He has red hair. - Él tiene pelo rojo. (indirect - 'red' describes his hair)

Since the person isn't being described directly, you can't use the same phrases as before.

• It wouldn't make sense to say 'I am blue eyes' instead you would say 'I have blue eyes'
