9/21 Community Vocabulary Lesson

Objective: To learn the vocabulary for the unit

Community: the people who live in a specific area.

• Example: My church members and I are part of the same community.

• P.S. 214 is in the West Farms community.

Acquaintance: a person you know, but not very well.

• Example: The man behind the counter at my favorite bodega is an acquaintance.

• Example: My mom's co-worker is an acquaintance.

Empathy: the ability to understand and share the feelings of someone else

• Example: being able to relate to your friend who has just dropped their ice cream on the ground, because you also have dropped your ice cream on the ground once before.

• Example: Feeling sad with your friend, whose dog has died, because you also remember how you felt when your cat died.

Compassion: concern for the suffering of someone else.

• Example: Even though I've never broken my arm, I feel bad that my friend broke her arm because I know it must hurt.

• Example: I see an old lady who is struggling to get on the bus, so I'm going to go help her with her bags.

Tradition: The passing of beliefs and customs from generation to generation.

• Example: It is tradition in my family to always get our ears pierced on our first birthday.

• Example: Blowing out candles on a cake is my birthday tradition.

Value: the worth, usefulness or importance something has.

• Example: Being honest is a trait that has high value.

• Example: Yeezys are highly valued and wanted by people who love sneakers.
