3

Chemical Stores

We use energy supplies to cook at home, to heat our homes, to travel by bus, car or aircrafts

Fuel has to be supplied as energy for work to be done

Fuels have to be burnt to release their store of energy. Foods, fuels and batteries are all made up of chemical substances. They are referred to as Chemical Stores of Energy.

To get energy out of fuel such as petrol or gas, burning has to take place. Burning is a chemical reaction

To get energy out of food, there is a chemical reaction inside your body

Inside a battery there are chemical substances, they react together to produce electricity.

Is a candle a chemical store of energy ?

Give a reason for your answer.

6

Energy stored in batteries

A torch needs energy supply to light up. This supply comes from the battery.

When all energy in the battery is used up, the torch can no longer light

Some batteries are rechargeable, meaning that once they run down, they can be charged again to supply the energy.
