2

Domain is all possible x values that can be entered in an equation or that can be seen on a graphed line/shape/function.

Range is all possible y values that can result from an equation or that can be seen on a graphed line/shape/function.

3

Domain and Range from a graph

Domain from a graph is easiest to see if you read the graph from left to right.

Range from a graph is easiest to see if you start from the bottom and then go up.

Look at the following graph and give the domain and range.

4

Be aware of a graph that has arrows in one or both directions. This means that it is infinity in that direction.

Function Notation

Function notation is another way to write "y=" in front of an equation. The equation is called a function and usually starts with "f(x)=" Here is an example of an equation change to function notation. Ex: y=2x+3, f(x)=2x+3.

When a number is placed inside the parenthesis in a function notation like so 'f(8)=", you look at the right side on the equation and substitute that number in place of x and calculate the answer.

Ex: f(8)=2x+ 3 will then be calculated 2(8)+3, which will equal 19.

8

Fill in the Blank

Find f(4) when f(x)=15-2x

9

Functions Operations: Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide

Two or more function can be added, subtracted, multiplied or divided.

In the next slide are some examples of these using an f(x) and a g(x) function. The result is referred to as h(x).

Multiple Choice

What would be the correct set up for (f - g)(x) if f(x)=9x-3 and g(x)=1-2x

1

9x-3-(1-2x)

2

9x-3+(1-2x)

3

9x-3*(1-2x)

4

 9x312x\frac{9x-3}{1-2x}

Multiple Choice

for (f - g)(x) if f(x)=9x-3 and g(x)=1-2x, the first step looks like this 9x-3 - (1-2x). What is the final answer?

1

7x-2

2

11x+4

3

7x+2

4

11x-4

Inverse Functions: Graph and Tables

Here are two inverse functions that are graphed and their tables are displayed. Take note tha their x and y values are switched.
